7.3.3 Research & Development
Support for research and development on biomass gasification technology has been a key aspect of the Ministry’s promotional measures. Although in the initial years, support was primarily rovided for basic developmental research, in the recent past the Ministry has mainly been supporting R&D projects in applied technology areas for improving efficiency, reducing costs and developing new applications. Presently, thirteen applied R&D projects are under progress with the financial support of the Ministry at around 10 leading research and academic institutions. A summary of the main projects currently underway is given in Table 7.3.

7.3.3.2 Some salient achievements of the applied R&D projects sponsored by the Ministry in the past include development of high temperature applications (for example, in steel re-rolling mills), systems for lime burning kilns,
systems for crematorium, etc. The gasifier industry has evolved through a process of continuous improvement for better performance with reliability and improvements in terms of diesel replacements for electrical and thermal applications in commercial mode. The Ministry has also identified thrust areas for further improvements in various components of biomass gasification systems. Some of these areas are - development of fluidised bed gasification systems specially for low capacities; development of a multi-biomass gasification system; development of cost effective engines for 100% producer gas operation in 10-30 kW range; development of Safety Control and Instrumentation packages for biomass gasifier linked IC engine systems; development of load
sharing and load control systems in multi-point use (thermal + electrical) gasification systems; etc. A close dialogue is maintained with the research institutions to ensure effectiveness of the sponsored projects as well as for development of proposals in the identified thrust areas.
